Why Leaving Your Job is Sometimes the Right Thing to Do

It’s a massive leap into the unknown, but sometimes leaving your job really is the right thing to do.  As with any relationship, a job takes time, love and commitment, and if those things are no longer there, then it may well be time to call it a day and try to move on.

Here are just a few reasons to call time on your job, even if it does feel like a painful breakup…

You Hate Your Work

Simple one to kick us off, but if you hate your job and dread going into the office every day, then it’s well and truly time to move on.  Life is too short to be stuck in a job you cannot stand, so now is the time to start looking for something new.

The Hours are Unreasonable

Do you find yourself staying behind every evening and missing putting the kids to bed?  Do you end up working through your lunch hour just to make sure you finish everything which needs to be done?  If your job is eating into your personal life and taking up your every waking thought, then it’s a toxic relationship and you’d be better off getting out as soon as you can.

You Don’t Get on with Your Co-Workers

Whether it’s the guy at the desk next to you or your supervisor, if you don’t get on with your colleagues then it may be time to move on.  There’s only so much one person can take when you have to see the same faces and put up with the same annoying habits day in, day out.  You don’t have to be best friends with your co-workers, but if the very sight of them walking through the doors in the morning drags you down, get out.

You Think You’ve Found a Better Offer

This is obviously the best (and easiest) reason to leave your current role.  If you’ve been offered a job with a higher salary, more responsibility or simply more reasonable working hours, congratulations are in order!  You don’t necessarily have to hate the job you’re in to feel it’s time to move on.  Sometimes if the grass is greener elsewhere, then it is just plain common sense to move on to pastures new.

You Fancy a Career Change

You don’t have to do anything as drastic as moving from the banking sector to baking cakes, but if you fancy something completely different, then maybe you should go for it.  It’s never too late for a career change, and if it’s a move into something you care passionately about then you could be setting yourself on course for future career satisfaction.

Follow Your Instincts

Sometimes you don’t need any particular reason to call time on your current job.  If your heart is telling you something isn’t right then you should listen, even if your head is telling you the holiday entitlement isn’t bad and the boss isn’t so useless after all.  We all have an internal compass when it comes to our careers, and if yours is pointing to the door, then it’s time to leave.

If you no longer enjoy your job and feel dissatisfied with your career trajectory, then now might be the time to start looking elsewhere.  Not all breakups have to be messy.  Take some time to cool off and consider your options, but never feel you have to be tied down if this isn’t the right role for you.
