Beauty of blogging – guest blog

April 1st, 2011

Introducing new resident guest blogger Jayne Read, University of Leeds graduate.

Being unemployed totally sucks, doesn’t it? Nothing to do and nothing to focus your energy on, you feel stuck in a rut. Often it feels like you’re stuck in a vicious circle because you don’t have the experience to get the job you really want or need, but you are struggling to get a relevant job in order to get the experience that will eventually progress your career.

For me, the advantages of working in retail for nearly two years after graduating meant that the hours were flexible, I was earning money to pay the bills and I was still interacting with interesting people. Working weekends, meant that I had weekdays free for exploring and pursuing personal interests. I dabbled in freelance photography, fashion modelling and writing. It was writing that eventually caught my full attention.

About two years ago I started contributing to local and online magazines and earning a little income from online article writing. However, it was my blog that captured my imagination, because I could write to my own briefs and my own rules!

Having lived with a boy (who is now my husband) for 6 years and being obsessed with browsing the internet for interesting fashion and beauty brands, I didn’t have anyone to share my exciting finds with at home, so I started Jayne’s Kitschen to share my enthusiasm for kitsch, vintage inspired and quirky fashion, beauty and baking!

For a long time, my little WordPress blog went unappreciated, with only about 5 to 10 views a day. After playing around and learning about social media, I began to utilise Facebook to promote my writing, this increased my reader numbers, and it also enabled me to link directly to companies I was writing about.

It wasn’t until a year ago that I reluctantly started using Twitter that my blog really kicked off! Twitter baffled me, I had no idea how to use it, but with some perseverance and research I mastered it and am now proud to boast nearly 300 followers! I use Twitter to promote my blog and also as a way to contact potential companies/ people to feature. My blog now gets at least 150 views a day!

Although I was working full time in a job that I knew I wasn’t going to be in forever, and although I had periods of unemployment, this constant interaction with the digital world and the skills I have used for this hobby and others, have lead to me gaining my first career role! After seeing a company director Tweet that he needed someone to do social media for his company, I replied and within a week I started my new job!

In addition to being hired via social media, I have made some fantastic contacts within independent fashion and beauty and have started making a name for myself. In the past few months people have started approaching me for features and guest blogs, it’s fantastic and gives me hope that I’m heading in the right direction now!

Blogging is a great tool to share your personal interest and views, to keep you busy and in the end will add to your CV and help you to network with relevant people.

You can follow me on Twitter @JayneJRead, check out my blog www.jayneskitschen.com and become a fan of Jayne’s Kitschen on Facebook. Please feel free to Tweet me if you have any addition questions!

Watch this space, my next guest blog will feature tips on using social media for internship and job hunting and the pursuit of personal interests.

Fashion Internships – a Fashion Faux Pas?

July 27th, 2010

Alternative-fashion-week--001For the student or graduate of fashion, it would be fair to say breaking into the London fashion scene is high up on the ‘to-do’ list.  Alongside Paris, Milan and New York, London claims the title of being one of the fashion capitals of the world, harbouring some of the most sought-after designers and never failing to produce fresh talent each year from some of the most prestigious fashion schools and colleges.  It’s such a highly sought-after career path that it seems like the young and inexperienced are willing to undergo exploitation in order to secure their dream job.

An article written by Jamie Elliott and published in the Guardian details the dream-turned-nightmare of an intern at Alexander McQueen, who was forced to work strenuously for long hours every day, enduring 8 months of unpaid work before deciding to quit.  Not only had he regularly been working seven days a week and doing tasks fit for actual employees, but he soon realised that there was realistically no chance of him ever gaining full employment.  His account is a chilling reminder that there are some companies out there who are more than willing to exploit their interns, unfairly subjecting them to the same working conditions and targets as actual employees, or sometimes even worse.

If you are looking for a fashion internship, fear not!  This is by no means ‘the norm’ and you should not feel disheartened by stories such as these.  There are always fantastic internships available which will feed your passion for fashion without the accompanying horror story.  Poppy, who completed a fashion internship through Inspiring Interns and is now a fashion designer at Timex Fashion 2, spoke about her experience as a fashion intern: “I learnt so much during my time there. I was able to build on my interpersonal skills, gain and expand my knowledge about the whole fashion industry, as well as widen my career prospects within the sector”.  Read her testimonial and a whole range of others at http://www.inspiringinterns.com/interns/testimonials/

Using a reputable internship agency is a safe way to ensure your work experience is a beneficial undertaking.  At Inspiring Interns we advertise a number of fashion internships, and we thoroughly check the companies beforehand to make sure that our interns’ experiences will be fair and non-exploitative, as well as being genuinely worthwhile.  We strive to provide internships which will lead to full-time employment, seeing the three-month period as a means to an end rather than an end in itself.  Take a look at our website at http://inspiringinterns.com/interns/vacancies/ for the latest vacancies to see if anything takes your fancy.

Internship / Graduate Scheme Interview Advice

December 7th, 2009

There’s more to life than clothes, but it’s a good place to start…

What to wear to an interview is a potential minefield. Though recruiters should be judging students on their sparkling CVs, not their dress sense, reports state that a staggering 37% of employers have decided against hiring a graduate due to the way they were dressed. Even something as minor as a girl not wearing tights or a guy not wearing a tie can impact on your success.

To suit or not to suit? For most jobs it’s fairly safe to assume suiting up is the way to go (law, finance, management, etc). However, in notoriously image conscious industries such as fashion, advertising, marketing and PR things are not so clear cut.

Tips:

  • Research the agency. If it’s a long established place like JWT or Weber Shandwick, chances are they’re going to approve of the smarter side of dressing with a hint of personality (e.g. colour, statement jewelry, and other interesting accessories). If it’s a younger agency, like VCCP or Mischief it’s better to go with something more casual, yet still professional (e.g. smart jeans but no low cut tops or scruffy t-shirts).
  • Do not go overboard on accessories. Keep it to one interesting piece.
  • There’s usually a recruitment video by current grads. Check to see what they’re wearing in the video and dress similarly.
  • Receptionists know everything. Call the front desk and ask for some inside info. They’re generally very helpful to graduates looking for internships or work experience.
  • Never wear a suit to UK ad agency Mother or you will be called an idiot…or worse (see clip ‘my first day at mother’).
  • If going for a fashion placement then make sure you show your personal style but try and make it fit to the design aesthetic of the company you’re applying to.
  • Before entering the interview for your dream work experience, pop into a local café and check your appearance in the mirror. Check there’s nothing on / in your teeth; clothes are straight; make-up isn’t smudged; and hair is brushed to avoid embarrassment.
  • Carry gum or mints with you for fresh breath – no one wants to know you had the tuna for lunch – but make sure you remove gum before going in.

Top tips for girls:

  • Wear heels but ones you can walk in. 69% of recruiters said girls in heels made a positive impression. From personal experience, if shoes are too high you look like a bit of a numpty tottering along the halls so safe options are wedges or boots.
  • Keep make up understated. You’re going for an interview, not a photo shoot.
  • Do the ‘sitting down test’. You’ll be seated for most of the time so make sure your skirt doesn’t ride up or that trousers are not too constricting.

Top tips for boys:

  • Make sure your shoes are polished and nails are tidy. Attention to small details will show that you care.
  • Take a woman shopping with you. We have an instinct for these things and will stroke your ego.
  • Invest in high quality garments. Worth it in the long run and you can always guilt your mum into paying.

Most importantly – be comfortable. If you’re comfortable in what you’re wearing and feel like you look good then you will naturally exude more confidence and confidence is the foundation of a good interview. If you’re still worried about your outfit then don’t hesitate to come into our London office where we can turn you from slobby student to impressive intern and find you the perfect placement!
