Intern
1. Why did you come to Inspiring Interns?
I came across Inspiring Interns on a graduate recruitment site and I saw that the internships that Inspiring were advertising were interesting and modern, which is really what graduates of our age are looking for.
2. What kind of internship were you looking for?
I was looking for an internship that will utilise my creativeness and to work with a company that were working with the innovative interactive platforms that are out there.
3. What did your internship involve and what did you learn?
My internship involved a lot of different things, which was really good because I learnt many new skills. I was able to see things that I had learnt during my university course and taught myself put in action, and see that what I've learnt is not in vain.
4. How influential do you feel your internship was in you gaining a permanent position?
I think my internship was very influential, it gave me the opportunity to demonstrate my punctuality and efficiency in the work place which pleasantly surprised my employer. I just focussed on completing everything to the best of my effort. My tip to all interns; if you want them to keep you show them what you can do and why they need you.
Succeeding in your internship
Key to our approach is creating an internship that gives you great experience and helps you on the road to employment. In order to achieve a full time position you'll need to work hard and work well. Completing tasks to a high level is the core element in a successful internship.
- Be enthusiastic! You need to make a positive impression on your prospective employers. Be pro-active look for jobs to do. Be the first with your hand up when volunteering. Remember this is your chance to put yourself in the shop window. Seize any opportunity to demonstrate what you are good at.
- Seek feedback on you performance. Asking colleagues whether you're doing well or not is a great way to improve your performance and improve relationships in the work place. By seeking feedback you will also demonstrate your ability to take direction. Companies want people that need to be told only once. If you can implement the advice you are given quickly it will help you stand out.
- Get to know people. An internship will give you the chance to get to know people first hand. Those that turn the internship opportunities into graduate jobs do so by forging relationships with their colleagues. Make every effort to attend social events, even if it's only after work drinks. Getting on well with your colleagues will make them more likely to employ you.
These are quite broad guidelines, but they are nothing without good work. You need to show insight and a good work ethic if you're going to succeed in today's climate.
