UK unemployment stuck at 17-year high as economy flatlines

ONS data shows unemployment rate at 8.4%, while economists note increase in number of people out of work has slowed.

George Osborne is facing growing pressure to take action to tackle long-term unemployment in next month's budget, after official figures revealed that 860,000 people have now been out of work for more than a year.

UK unemployment rises to 2.68m

Unemployment across the economy rose by 118,000 in the three months to November, to 2.68 million, the ONS said, in the latest sign that the UK slowed sharply in the autumn.

The unemployment rate rose to 8.4%, the ONS said, its highest since 1995, and up 0.3% over the quarter.

The number of young people out of work is also continuing to rise, hitting 1.04 million in the three months to November, up 52,000 on the three months to October.

Number of UK-born university applicants slumps by 8%

In the year fees of up to £9,000 kick in, 283,680 people apply for university from within UK, compared with 306,908 last year.

The number of UK-born students applying to start university this autumn – when fees rise to up to £9,000 a year – has slumped by almost 8%, official figures show.

Unemployment 'set to rise in 2012'

Unemployment will increase to 2.85 million in 2012, while the number of people in work will fall by 120,000 as jobs continue to be lost in the public sector, a report predicts.

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) forecast that the jobless total will reach its highest since 1994, adding that it will peak at 2.9 million in the first half of 2013
