Overall responsibility

Developing, implementing and delivering the commercial strategy and leading the commercial team to achieve this. Focus on prospective and current client engagement. Overseeing and co-ordinating the delivery of Business Development Strategies. Overseeing the delivery of contract reviews and contract variations. Working with the Strategic Operations Director to review/draft procedures, review and draft departmental strategies against the company objectives and devise plans for their delivery.

Key areas of responsibility

  • Effectively manage and coach the commercial team to deliver the commercial strategy in line with the company objectives
  • Develop the skills of the commercial team and encourage a team ethos
  • Manage the distribution of work and task allocation within the BD team where necessary
  • Oversee the management of a client database (Salesforce) to track on going performance and communication with prospective clients
  • Oversee and co-ordinate the tender/proposal process to ensure responses and documents are submitted in the correct format and on time
  • Work with the Financial Director to ensure correct financial information is submitted for tender returns
  • Work with the Strategic Operations Director to analyse department performance, putting in place plans to address performance as applicable
  • Performance manage the BDM(s), Client Relationship Manager and Commercial Administrator responsible for Sustainability and Communication
  • Oversee and assist with the content and format for presentations and carry out presentations to retain current or win new business as required
  • Work with Strategic Operations Director to identify and develop unique selling points (USP’s) to aid sales performance
  • Work with the BD Team to ensure that leads and opportunities to generate new business are being identified and followed up on, adopting a proactive approach and targeting key customers
  • Oversee the contract review and contract variation processes
  • Oversee the negotiation of contracts with clients assisting with the resolution of issues as appropriate
  • Ensure that procedures with regards to mobilisation are being followed by the BD team for new contract start ups
  • Develop productive relationships with existing customers and contribute to ensuring an excellent customer experience is delivered at all times
  • Effectively manage and deliver on-going marketing campaigns to promote our services and maximise the profitable growth of the business including use of website, social media and case studies
  • Oversee the continuous development of our marketing material including online resources such as our website and social networking to maintain strong image and brand awareness and analytics to develop and improve our online presence and utilise resources to full capacity to ensure increased sales performance
  • Generate timely reporting of performance against department KPI’s and objectives ensuring that targets are being met
  • Communicate with all departments to ensure all terms of a contract are understood and delivered, particularly a contracts financial aspects
  • Work with the Strategic Operations Director to develop ideas and suggestions for innovations and sustainability initiatives that can form a part of our offering to clients and consider how these could be implemented
  • Ensure consistency within the company’s branding and marketing materials

Necessary qualifications, skills and experience

  • Experience of compiling PQQ and tender information
  • Experience of presenting to existing and potential clients
  • Experience of working in a commercial role, of managing a team and of working closely with all levels of employee, client and suppliers
  • To have an excellent understanding of financial information
  • Ability to communicate information clearly and concisely
  • Team player with excellent communication skills and a hands on approach
  • Attention to detail is key
  • High degree of customer service, confidentiality and professionalism
  • Organised, methodical, proactive with excellent time management and delegation skills
  • Works efficiently and calmly – tight deadlines often arise
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office package – preferably with an in-depth knowledge of excel
  • A high standard of verbal and written English (ESOL Level 2 or GCSE A to C grade)
