Top Five Companies to Work for in Liverpool

The University of Liverpool is one of the select Russell Group of universities, and alongside Liverpool John Moores, it pulls in a big student crowd from across the country and overseas.  Liverpool is well-known for being a friendly and creative city, with a strong arts scene and rich cultural heritage which appeal to lots of younger people.

It also has an exciting jobs market for students and recent graduates, with some great employers choosing to base themselves in the city and surrounding regions.  If you’re thinking about making Liverpool the starting point for your career, here are our top five companies to apply to…

Curtins

The building consultancy firm Curtins made it onto The Sunday Times list of the top one hundred companies to work for in 2018, ranked at number 16.  The company specialises in advising on building, infrastructure and the environment, and has been in operation for more than half a century.

There are plenty of perks if you get hired by Curtins, including a generous final salary pension scheme and funding for further education.  It’s also worth noting that 91% of Curtins’ staff agreed that their team was fun to work with, so it’s not all work with no play.

Shop Direct

You don’t have to want to break into retail management to take a look at the careers pages of Shop Direct.  Based in the Speke area of Liverpool, Shop Direct owns online retail brands including Very.co.uk and Littlewoods.com, some of the most visited clothing, homeware and giftware sites in the UK.

Roles with Shop Direct vary, so whether you’ve studied marketing, fashion design or software development, you’re more than likely to find a role to suit your skillset.

Boodles

Their flagship store might be on London’s fashionable New Bond Street, but luxury jewellery firm Boodles is a family company headquartered in Liverpool.  Boodles was founded way back in 1798, so joining them means you’re becoming part of a very prestigious company with a long and illustrious history, designing and crafting high-end bespoke jewellery.

They like to take on people who have qualifications in jewellery design, but if that’s not you then don’t despair – they’re also regularly on the lookout for people who can show their talent for PR, HR, digital design, branding, accounts and marketing.

Matalan

As with Shop Direct, you don’t need to be a sales expert to get a job with Matalan.  Their head offices are in Knowsley, just outside Liverpool, and as one of the country’s largest value retailers there are always lots of vacancies coming up.

The company prides itself on its strong team ethic and sense of fun, and roles in IT support, marketing, HR, design, finance and buying are all up for grabs.  There are also plenty of opportunities to take to the shop floor in one of the more than 200 stores around the UK, so if you do decide you’d like to go into retail management, then this is a good company to get started with.

Mando

If you’re a digital design or creative type, then Mando might be the place for you.  This digital agency has worked with big names including TalkTalk, Bentley and United Utilities, offering digital strategy programmes to help build brands and make sure their clients’ customers get the best possible online experience.  Their offices also sound like a pretty cool place to work, with perks including healthcare packages, birthday parties and Friday afternoons gathered around the ‘award-winning beer fridge’ or in the local pub.

Since being named Capital of Culture back in 2008, Liverpool has continued to enjoy a fun social scene and redevelopment of the city centre and docks has injected new life into the place.  This is a great city to start out in if you want to find a rewarding career and enjoy the nightlife and culture of a fantastic university city.
