5 Apps to Help you Learn a New Language

There a lots of great ways to learn a new language, from fully immersing yourself into a new country and learning from scratch, to studying a languages degree. However, these options are not always feasible.

To cater for the demand of a new wave of dedicated and curious language learners, a number of companies have sprung up with apps to help you learn a new language or brush up on old skills from the comfort of your mobile device. Check out these 5 apps to get started with a new language.

Duolingo

Duolingo is the most popular language learning app, and it’s easy to see why. This completely free app allows you to learn 23 language in a fun and easy way. A lot of the games and classes are created by native speakers, meaning you’ll be receiving a great language learning experience. You’ll even be able to talk to bots enabling you to practice your newly found skills.

Memrise

If you’re looking for a fun flashcard experience, get yourself the Memrise app. Memes and gamification are what make Memrise unique; you’ll learn a language by creating funny associations with the words you start studying. This app is an exciting and interesting way to learn words and phrases in your chosen language.

Babbel

Although Babbel is a paid app, its free version has a great selection of 40 classes, meaning you won’t have to spend any money to give this app a try. Head to the beginners courses for new languages that tickle your fancy, or brush up on your current languages by choosing a course that lets you work on a specific skill you want to develop.  

busuu

This app is free but in order to unlock all the features you’ll need to invest $17 a month. With busuu you can interact with native speakers as they correct texts created by learners like you. You can also chat – either written or spoken – to native speakers in real time using the desktop version.

Rosetta Stone

If you’re looking to invest more money into a fully immersive experience created by pioneers in the language learning industry, check out Rosetta Stone. Accent learning coaches will help you sound like a native speaker, while online and offline learning will let you master your chosen language.
