What You Should Do Over The Summer Holidays Versus What You’ll Actually Do

Ah! Summer is almost over. Thank goodness you found time to do that mountain hike, catch up on all that term-time reading and finally get to grips with…

Oh, who are we kidding? Here’s what you’ve actually spent your summer doing.

What you should have done: attended university taster days or summer schools

Heading to uni next year? Most universities have summer schools or taster days that you can attend. From attending lectures to seeing how you’ll cope with life without parents, it’s as close you’ll get to actually attending university. You’ll also get to find out whether the course you want to do is actually for you. It’s a no-brainer, right?

What you actually did: watched Netflix

Unfortunately, a few months with nothing to do is also just long enough to catch up on every Breaking Bad episode ever aired. Walter White or that summer course in ethnomusicology? Get me a laptop now.

What you should have done: applied for part-time jobs

You’re broke and bored and your parents keep nagging you to get a job. You’re finally old enough to enter the world of work and to stop ‘borrowing’ money from the Bank Of Mum And Dad.

Not only will the extra cash allow you to buy all the things, it also gives you skills and experience that you can add to your empty CV.

What you actually did: slept all day and all night

But… what’s that you say? School’s out?

That means sleeping is in. It’s time to reconnect with your duvet and pillow.

Those all-nighters you pulled to cram in last minute revision have finally taken its toll on you. The summer holidays are the perfect time to catch up on all that sleep you’ve missed and you’re going to take advantage of all that free time you have. Summer job or lazy slob? I know which I’d choose!

While those few months off may seem like a long time, they fly by quickly. Make the most of your free time; reading ahead or emailing your lecturer to find out about the course can make the process of going back to university a whole lot easier. You’ll be the coolest kid in class when people realise you know it all already!

What you actually did: watched videos of cats

On the way to sending that email to last term’s lecturer, you got distracted by a video of a dog helping a cat up the stairs. Ten hours later, you’re thousands of GIFs in and counting. Why spend time thinking about university when it’s only just ended? You can watchpuffballs of fluffiness doing funny things instead.

Good luck going back to uni! We’re sure your diploma in Feline Online Culture will stand you in good stead come graduation… Snicker.
