Spread Your Wings: 4 Things Uni Teaches You That Aren’t On The Syllabus

If you’ve just started uni, first of all a huge congratulations! You’re about to embark on the most wonderful three years of your life, where you’ll grow not just academically but also personally. Obviously the whole point of uni is to leave with a shiny degree. But what else do you gain from your time in tertiary education?

Here are four positive things that the experience of uni life can help you with.

You go out of your comfort zone

This applies to pretty much every aspect of uni. From your living arrangements to group projects to socialising on a daily basis, you’ll be put in unfamiliar situations and you’ll start to realise how much more you’re capable of. You’ll be meeting different people from different walks of life and, once you’re in the moment and connecting with all these new individuals, you’ll be surprised at how much your self-confidence grows.

Responsibility is your middle name

A few months back you were still at home with mummy and daddy and didn’t know what a washing machine was. Now you’re doing your own shopping, cooking your own food, separating your whites and colour clothes every Sunday and getting that wash on.

But seriously, aside from household stuff you’re totally bossing this responsibility thing. Things like signing up to a doctor’s surgery, dentists, opticians and so on were probably all done by your parents when you were at home. Now you’re taking charge of your own life and you’re doing pretty good!

You opt for comfort over style

If you were the type of person who got up an hour before school to pick an outfit and do your hair, things could change drastically once you’re at uni. We’re not saying that you’ll go into lectures in your PJs (although it does happen!) but you’ll find that the student approach is somewhat… more relaxed.

The majority of students opt for comfort over style. Taking pride in your appearance is still important, but you’ll see more people in pumps than stilettos around campus.

You love to learn

That’s right: you’re going to love learning more than you ever thought you would. If you’re studying a subject that you enjoy then you’ll find your learning experience become so much more than you ever expected. You’ll find yourself delving further into books and actually wanting to learn more.

It kind of becomes more than just getting a degree in the subject. At the end of the day if you want a career in this field then you’ll be taking it upon yourself to find opportunities such as work experience and further your own knowledge.

As long as you put your heart into everything 100% you’ll be getting the most out of your uni experience. So buckle up and get ready for the ride of your life.
