Five Thoughts Every Student Has While Writing An Essay

If you are at university and studying a literature-based subject, then you know what it feels like to have essay after essay due. It’s not a fun time when you’re constantly having to adhere to deadlines.

  1. “The deadline is in a month, that’s so much time!”

Take it from me, do NOT start an essay the day before the deadline. Yes, we are students and yes we have other things to do and other deadlines but this will NOT make your life any easier.

  1. “Is the essay long enough now? Let me just add extra sources in the bibliography to add to the word count.”

Which professor doesn’t want you to look at extra sources? As long as they aren’t Wikipedia, Sparknotes or Cliffnotes. The more books you take a look at or websites you use to gain information, the better your essay will be and also the better your bibliography/word count will be. It’s a win win!

  1. “This essay is the worst thing I have ever written, I am going to fail.”

Instead of thinking “I am going to fail”, think to yourself “I am going to try my best”.

  1. “My professor is going to think I am stupid.”

No, they won’t. Although you can’t tell what a professor is thinking, you can always go to them to ask for help – that is what they are there for as well. Ask them to approve your outline or ask a teaching assistant, if not a professor. The more help you get, the more you will be able to succeed in writing the essay. Then what can the professor say? “Good job!”

  1. “Done!  Time to partayyy.”

It’s so important to reward yourself as well, or as they say these days: “treat yoself”.
