Pancake Day in London

How are you celebrating Pancake Day tomorrow? Are you donning your apron, grabbing your frying pan and heading…outside? Yes, as well as eating pancakes, there’s a long tradition of pancake races in London! Participants have to toss pancakes in a frying pan as they run to the finish line. If you don’t fancy racing yourself, you can always cheer on the runners who could range from hipsters to MPs raising money for charity.

So if you don’t want to confine your Pancake Day to the kitchen this year then here are some of the races and other events taking place in London tomorrow:

Great Spitalfields Pancake Race
If you want to watch teams of four dressed up in wacky outfits and running while flipping pancakes to raise money for London’s Air Ambulance then head to Dray Walk, Brick Lane at 12.30pm tomorrow.

Parliamentary Pancake Race
Fancy watching high-profile participants from the Houses of Parliament race against members of the press? The Parliamentary Pancake Race is taking place in the grounds of Victoria Tower Gardens in Westminster and will raise funds and awareness for the brain injury charity Rehab UK.

Better Bankside Pancake Day Race
Teams from local businesses will be showing off their pancake-tossing skills inside Borough Market. The winning team will receive the Pancake Day Trophy along with a full Borough Market Kitchen Kit, which consists of Oven Glove, Apron, tea towel and cool bag. Some of the traders will also be on hand with foodie treats!

Annual Breakfast Club Pancake Challenge
If you would rather put your money where your mouth is for charity then compete in the pancake eating challenge at The Breakfast Club in Hoxton or Spitalfields. The contest starts at 7.30pm and you will need to register in advance. If you manage to eat 12 pancakes in 20 minutes, you will win dinner and drinks for six friends and yourself. If you are beaten, you pay for your pancakes and the takings go to Rays of Sunshine Children’s Charity. Win, win!

Pancake demonstration at Fortnum & Mason
Learn how to make the perfect pancake at Fortnum & Mason in Piccadilly. They will be holding a free demonstration kitchen on the 1st floor from 11am.

Pancake Day at Chiswell Street Dining Rooms
If you would prefer a more reserved Pancake Day then head to Chiswell Street Dining Rooms to sample a selection of gourmet pancake creations from leading pastry chef Boyne Kleynhans. Available all day, the menu includes American style blueberry pancakes, served with cured crispy bacon and maple syrup or a poppy seed crepe filled with foie gras, wild mushrooms and cauliflower puree. If you prefer a sweet pancake then you can also try the blood orange crepe Suzette or the banana and chocolate crepe with pistachio praline. Prices start at £6.50.

Leadenhall Market Pancake Race
Teams made up from businesses in the market and the surrounding area compete for glory in the third Leadenhall Market Pancake Race. Pop along to the historic and ornate covered market to cheer on your favourite team!
