Finding a job is a job in itself, and when you have to write one too many applications it can be demotivating. After time spent painstakingly choosing the right words to characterise your best traits, you hear nothing back and have to start the repetitive process again. This can mean spending a lot of ‘wasted’ time at your desk, just when you thought your study days were over.
Eventually you will succeed with your applications and get your dream job, but until then, here is my track-list of inspirational songs in ascending order to keep your spirits up and your hands typing:
5. Walking On Sunshine, Katrina & the Waves
Recorded for the debut album of Katrina & the Waves in 1985, it’s a timeless and uplifting track. Whilst not specifically about being your best and working hard, the infectious, fast-paced music still leaves you feeling energised and ready for a hard-working day. In Autumn, it also provides a reminder of summer and hotter weather to warm your spirits – “Now time to feel good.”
Song fact: The song featured on an episode of Glee, mashed-up with “Halo” by Beyonce Knowles.
4. Good Life, One Republic
When under pressure, it’s easy to concentrate on the bad and forget the good, but this song makes it impossible to dwell on unemployment and cover letters. The track features whistling which leads to childhood memories and a reminder of everything we have to feel good about. I dare you not to find something positive as Ryan Tedder soulfully sings, “This could really be a good life/ Got this feeling that you can’t fight/ This city is on fire tonight.”
Song fact: One to put on repeat.
3. It’s a Beautiful Day, U2
This catchy pop-tune from Irish legends U2 is an instant winner. It’s guitar riffs roll onto each other with such ease, you are both calmed and pushed forward in your endeavours. Every day is beautiful, even if spent at your desk, as you are doing something positive for your future.
Song fact: Bono describes this song as about “a man who has lost everything, but finds joy in what he still has.”
2. Don’t Stop Believing, Journey
This song has been motivating people for decades with its powerhouse vocals. Telling the story of a chance meeting between a couple from different sides of the tracks, it says that you never know what surprises life has in store. So keep on researching, applying and honing your skills as lead singer Steve Perry crones, “Working hard to get my fill/ Everybody wants a thrill/ Paying anything to roll the dice/Just one more time.”
Song fact: Against standard song structure, the chorus is brought in at the end.
1. Beat It, Michael Jackson
Beat It raises your heartbeat, gets you ready to fight and empowers you with inner-strength, which is why it makes my number one spot. Michael’s raw talent and energy is infectious and gets you dancing as you work away, which is good for your circulation. Play this track when you feel you have something to prove and it’ll no doubt make you go the extra mile.
Song fact: Platinum certified, this track’s video was inducted into the Music Video Producers Hall of Fame.
