Social network sites are incredibly useful, both for businesses and would-be-employees. They certainly warrant whole websites dedicated to commenting on them like the frankly excellent blog

Yet, on reflection, there is something inherently strange about them. By their very definition social networks take the place of real, human interaction. Conversely, they promote it (eventually) with a range of people you might otherwise never have met or re-ignited friendships with.

It’s the latter that is important when it comes to finding a job, or indeed progressing in one you already have. No-one of generation Y is NOT savvy with Facebook, Twitter and the like; but certainly not everyone realizes the potential they represent for building up your professional network.
